John J. Thomas, 84, Hastings, entered the gates of Heaven on April 30, 2016 to be reunited with his loving wife Shirley who left us three years ago. John passed away peacefully in his sleep at St. Benedict Manor. Born September 20, 1931, in St. Boniface; he was a son of the late Alvin and Edna (Baker) Thomas. He was also preceded in death by his son Brian Thomas, his granddaughter Katelyn Long, his great grandson Abram Ranck, his siblings Clarence, Amandus, Cletus Thomas, and Hilda Lee. John was the loving husband of 60 wonderful years to his wife Mary Ethel “Shirley” (Cunningham), whom he married July 12, 1952, Father to children, Cheryl (Kurt) Long, Ehrenfeld, Sandy (Joe) Owens, Hastings, Bruce Thomas, Tyrone, Lori (Lee) Donoughe, Ebensburg, Lisa (Jim) Lantzy, Sterling, VA, Tina Maggi, State College, loving Grandfather to, Kent, Keith and Korey Long, Lindsey Sowers, Dana Ranck, Scott Owens, Ryan, Christopher, and Brett Donoughe, Abby Keo, Katie, Jaimee, and Claire Lantzy, Lauren, Tara, Nicholas, and Nathan Maggi; and thirteen great grandchildren; brother to, Gertrude Oldham, Betts McMullen, Alvin Thomas, and Janet Keegan, and Uncle John to many nieces and nephews. John served our country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and served during the Korean War. He owned and operated John Thomas Heating and Plumbing for many years. John enjoyed gardening, picking blueberries with his grandkids, bowling, birdwatching from his favorite chair, and playing Cinch. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, and the Hastings Senior Citizens. Anyone who knew John knew that family was first and foremost in his life. His children and grandchildren enjoyed listening to his stories about growing up on the farm, and his military days, as well as being greeted with a “Deutsibeckle”. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all of John’s caregivers, and to the staff of St. Benedict Manor for all their loving care. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Monday at Easly-Hindman Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Hastings. A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Father Thaddeus Rettger officiating, Burial at Church Cemetery.
