Obituary

Schonek, Geraldine M. 93 of Westmont died December 8, 2009 at the Allegheny Lutheran Home. Born April 21, 1916 in Sproul , Pa. Daughter of the late Chauncey and Jennie (Black) Lingenfelter. Preceded in death by husband Rudolph C. Schonek whom she married November 4, 1943. Geraldine was a graduate of the former Windber Hospital School of Nursing and took undergraduate courses at Pitt as she began her career at the Magee Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh . She was last employed at Conemaugh Memorial Hospital . She was a lifelong friend to the nursing profession.

She received an honorary doctorate from St. Francis University. Geraldine and her husband established two endowments at St. Francis that have provided scholarships for many students over the years. The couple contributed to community endeavors including Allegheny Lutheran Services, arts centers, and numerous anonymous gifts.

“Aunt Gerry” will be missed by her many friends and relatives. She treated her nieces and nephews as her own children, providing care and nurturing kindness to them all.

Geraldine is a member of Christ Lutheran church.
Friends will be received from 6-8 pm Friday at the Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc. 146 Chandler Ave. Funeral services will be held at 10am Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church , Elknud Lane the Rev. Robert Abarno officiating. Interment at Grandview Cemetery . In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial contributions to the church.
