Obituary
Roberts, John Andrew Sr., 88, of Canton and Johnstown, PA, died peacefully November 22, 2011, at his daughters home in Johnstown listening to his beloved bagpipe recording, after a brief illness. Born March 4, 1923 in Middleboro, MA and raised and schooled in Boston, MA.
Preceded in death by parents, Joseph and Annie (Anderson) Roberts and wife of nearly 50 years, the former Dorothy Deane. John was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survived by his seven children: Barbara Ann and husband Frederick Adamski, Doylestown, PA; Eleanor and husband Daniel McGonagle, Duxbury, MA; Charles and wife Kathryn, Roaring Branch and Altoona, PA; Nancy and husband Thomas Been, Johnstown; Joseph and wife Elizabeth, Towanda; John and wife Kathleen, Hollidaysburg and Timothy, Bristol, PA. He also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Immediately after high school, John joined the US Marines and served in the Pacific Theatre in Iwo Jima in WWII. He apprenticed as an orthotist and prosthetist in Philadelphia, under Henry Greiner, opening his own prosthetics and orthotics businesses in Philadelphia and Johnstown, PA. He also directed the Wake Forest University Orthotics Center in Winston-Salem. He was adjunct faculty teacher in orthotics and prosthetics at NYU, Northwestern University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest.
In his retirement, John was a hunter, gentleman farmer, horseman, gourmet cook and cookbook collector as well as booklover of American History and Native American cultures. John was a member of St. Michaels Church in Canton and St. Patricks Church in Johnstown.
At the request of the family, there will be no viewing. Services will be held at a later date at the familys convenience.
