Obituary
Dale John Malzi, 59, of Thaxton, VA, passed away at his home Wednesday, July 24 th, 2024. He was born August 12 th , 1964, to Betty (Goller) and LeRoy Malzi in Johnstown, PA. Dale graduated from Conemaugh Valley High School in 1982 where he excelled both academically and in football. Dale was selected to attend the West Point Preparatory School in Ft. Monmouth, NJ where he again excelled academically and played football. He received his appointment to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1983. Dale played football at West Point and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1987. Following graduation, Dale attended the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Ft. Benning, GA, and upon graduation was stationed at Ft. Riley, KA as a lieutenant and platoon leader in the First Infantry Division. In 1990, he deployed to Kuwait and fought against the Iraqi forces during Operation Desert Storm and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was part of the security detail overseeing the signing of the completion of the war. Upon redeployment to Ft. Riley, he left the military in 1992 at the rank of Captain and began his civilian career. His military awards include the Bronze Star, Army Achievement Medal, and Southwest Asia Service Medal. Dale began his civilian career in 1992 at Alcatel in Roanoke, VA as a Maintenance Supervisor and Process Engineer. Over the next 32 years, Dale worked in various roles in Engineering, Facility Maintenance and Engineering and in 2019 received an MBA from Liberty University. Dale concluded his career as a consultant sharing his broad experience, knowledge and leadership skills. In 2006, Dale married the love of his life and soul mate Glenda Turner. They lived in Thaxton, VA until his death. Dale was an excellent handy-man and loved to build furniture. He enjoyed helping others fix things and helping people in need. He liked to fish and spend time outdoors, playing pool with friends, golfing, transporting rescue dogs with his wife Glenda, and loved the beach. Most importantly, he loved to spend time with Glenda and his family. Dale was a spiritual man. During his early life, he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Johnstown, PA and later was a founding member of Bedford Lutheran Church in Bedford, VA. Dale is survived by his wife Glenda Lea Malzi (Turner); sisters Peggy Ann Malzi- Bizjak and Cindy (Larry) Amenti; nephew Corey (Lori) Amenti; niece Amanda (Greg) Hearn; great nephews Liam and Caleb; and great nieces Alyssa and Kira. He was preceded in death by his parents Betty and LeRoy Malzi. In lieu of flowers please give to the friends of Bedford County Animal Shelter or the American Cancer Society. A funeral service will be held at Oakey’s North Chapel, Roanoke, VA on 3 August 2024 at 2 pm.
