Obituary
John Alton Kiser, 90, of Johnstown, PA, passed away peacefully at homes on May 11, 2025. Born April 12, 1935, he was the beloved son of the late Walter T. and Mary Audrey (Nail) Kiser. He was preceded in death by his infant siblings, William and Roberta; triplet brother, Joseph; brother, Robert; and his devoted and loving wife of 39 years, Gertrude (Miller) Kiser. John is survived by his children, John S. Kiser and fiancée Bonnie Davis, Fawn, married to Ed Slonka, Jr., Donna Kovalchek, Audrey Swetz, married to Dave Tepeguezian, Hope, RI, and Robin, married to Vince Gottleib, Houston, TX; he was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to, Jon F. Kiser, married to Lauren Laslo (Delanie), Johnstown, PA, Jodi Kiser, married to Dave Beichner (Drake and Leif), Slippery Rock, PA, Scott Swetz, married to Carlene Murdy (Nico and Sienna), Beverly, MA, Sean Swetz, married to Brian Kamp, East Walpole, MA, Zachary Gottleib, married to Kevin Atto, Fresno, CA, and Stephanie Gottleib, married to Brad Creighton (Jackson and Peyton), Houston, TX; also survived by sister, Beatrice Blettner, Bradenton, FL; triplet brother, James, married to Rose (Keifline), Palmer, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War abroad the USS Salvager. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to the Johnstown Police Department, retiring after 27 years of service. After retiring, John and Gert moved to Naple, FL, where he worked as a condo manager for 19 years. John returned to Johnstown in 2003 and worked at First Lutheran Church for 20 years as their maintenance man. A true outdoorsman, John found joy in hunting Beaverdale Mountain and fishing Elton Dam and Bens Creek. He was an avid gardener, always eager to share the fruits of his labor with family, neighbors, and friends. He loved riding his Harley-Davidson, attending Thunder in the Valley annually, and cheering for his beloved Steelers and Pirates. He was also a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. John was a member of the American Legion for 58 years and was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church on Vine Street, where he remained deeply committed to his faith and community. Just recently, he joyfully celebrated his 90th birthday, surrounded by the love and laughter of his family and friends. He will be remembered for his deep devotion to family, generous spirit, and unwavering faith. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to his church’s Preservation Fund or Walden Holl Fund, First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine Street, Johnstown, PA 15901. A viewing will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 10:00am until the time of the service at 11:00am at First Lutheran Church.
