Obituary

Kane, Dr. Thomas J., 70, Pittsburgh, died, Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Shadyside Hospital.

He was a son of the late John and Mary Kane of Johnstown. Also preceded in death by brother, GySgt James B. Kane, USMC; sister, Carol (Kane) Elliott.

Survived by brother, Edward Kane; sister, Susan (Kane) Heidenthal and husband Jim; brother-in -law, Bill Elliott; and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Kane was a graduate of Johnstown Catholic High School, 1960; received AB, MA and PhD (1968) from the University of Pittsburgh; taught at Pitt from 1965 until his retirement in 1999; coached the University of Pittsburgh to the National Debate Championship in 1981 and was twice named National Coach of the year by Emory University (1973) and Georgetown University (1981); named Honorary Citizen of Texas in 1982 for his work with high school debaters at Baylor University; he enjoyed working in politics and served for 16 years as an elected member of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee. He enjoyed traveling both in the USA and throughout the world, and made many friends along the way; he also did volunteer work with Family House in Pittsburgh and taught English to Russian migrs at the Jewish Community Center in Pittsburgh.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Voluntary contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
