Obituary
George Haverilla, 97, of Johnstown, died March 18, 2013 at home.
Born March 30, 1915 in DeLancey, PA, son of the late John and Mary Jane (Bzinak) Havrilla.
Preceded in death by wife, Elizabeth (Shields); infant son, Gregory Shields Haverilla; brothers, Albert; Frederick; Richard and William and sister, Ann.
Survived by his loving daughter, Dianne, married to Frank P. Trebel, Johnstown; sister, Margaret “Marge” H. Kippert, Punxsutawney; brother, John Paul, Punxsutawney.
He adored his grandchildren, Darren Paul (Maria “Masha” Ponomaryova), Frankfurt, Germany; Kevin Patrick (Kim Metz), Silver Spring, MD.; Adrianne Mellissa (Eric Millinder), Johnstown and Erin Michelle (Donald J. Brown III), Raleigh, NC.
Also survived by nine precious great-grandchildren, MorganAnn; Fox; Emma; Ryan; Katelyn Paige; D.J.; Audrey Rose; Hannah and Sasha.
He leaves behind his faithful and beloved cat, Pumpkin.
George was a retired superintendent of the power plant at Indiana University.
He was a charter member of the Young Neighbors of Grove Chapel, Indiana; the Marion Center Lions Club; the United Mine Workers of America for 70 years and a member of Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church.
He was a US Navy veteran serving in 1935-1939, aboard the USS Quincy as a chief machinists mate and re-enlisted in 1943 and served with the military government unit in Okinawa, Japan.
Woodworking; furniture making; wood sculpting; auto mechanics; cooking; baking; candy making and reaching out to anyone in need were among his many talents.
George and his wife retired 30 years ago to Florida and he logged over 5000 hours as a volunteer at the Largo Medical Center, where he was honored with the Dr. Friss Award for his dedication and service.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing.
A memorial service will be held at 10am Saturday, March 23, at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Fr. Mark Begley, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cambria County Humane Society in his memory.
