Obituary
Hindman, Robert Wilbur, 90, Johnstown, died January 7, 2014 at home. Born November 8, 1923 in Friedens. Son of the late Thomas and Larkey (Boucher) Hindman. Preceded in death by brothers William, Harry, Edgar, and James; sisters Katherine Sweetwood, Ella Miller, Ruth Balch, and Martha Raab-Gordon; son-in-law Kerry S. Handlan; and sister-in-law Dorothy Hindman. Survived by loving wife of 59 years Ruth (Lehman); daughter Kimberly and life partner R. Craig Bittner; grandson Dezi Drew Matthew, both of Somerset; brother John, of Palm Harbor, Florida; sister-in-law Grace Hindman; special sister-in-law Sarah Flori; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Robert was a member of the Scalp Level Church of the Brethren. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, survived the sinking of troopship Leopoldville, and was awarded with the Bronze Star & Purple Heart Medals for his service. He served with the Black Panthers, was a member of the Panther Veteran Organization, and was a retired instructor at the Hiram G. Andrews Center. He was also a life member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a member of the Greater Johnstown Lodge 538 of Free & Accepted Masons of PA, as well as numerous other Masonic organizations.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hindman Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 1521 Frankstown Road, Johnstown, PA 15902 where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday; Pastor Ronald J. St. Clair officiating. Interment Grandview Cemetery. Military rights will be performed by the Menoher VFW Post 155 Ritual Team. Memorial contributions may be given to the Scalp Level Church of the Brethren or to Conemaugh Hospice.
