Obituary
Pappert, Dr. Wayne J., DMD, 82, passed away on December 28, 2024. Born December 10, 1942, in Pittsburgh, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Streno) Pappert. Preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale Pappert; and grandson, Bam Alexander Sherwood. Survived by loving wife, Mary Lou (Sherwood) Pappert; daughters, Rachel E. Docekal (Steve) of Lake Worth, FL and Rebecca A. Maniates (Michael) of Abu Dahbi, United Arab Emerite; sons, Gregory Sherwood (Christie) of Denver, NC and Alexander Sherwood (Amy) of New Paltz, NY; grandchildren, Justin Sherwood, Morgan Sherwood, Katie Sherwood, Carly Docekal, Lilly Docekal, Lola Sherwood, and Elliot Maniates; and great-grandson, Sawyer Sherwood. Wayne was lovingly known to his grandchildren as ‘Papa Doc’ and ‘Daddy Doc.’ Dr. Pappert graduated from the University of Pittsburgh as a scholarship athlete and captain in swimming in 1964. He then entered the University of Pittsburgh Dental School, graduating in 1968. Following his graduation, he was commissioned as a captain in the US Army, where he served in a dental capacity for 3 years. One of those years was served in Vietnam, where he was awarded the bronze star. In 1971, Dr. Pappert began practicing Dentistry in Johnstown, something he loved doing for over 40 years. He and his partner, Dr. Seymour Finklestein formed Family Dentistry, 223 Main St., Johnstown, PA. Dr. Pappert was a member of the ADA, PDA, a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, a member in the International College of Dentistry. He was also nominated and awarded membership in the Prestigious Pierre Frachard Academy. He was a staff member at both Conemaugh and Lee Hospitals. In addition, his involvement in organized dentistry found him serving as President of Cambria County Dental Society, President of the PA 7th District, and served on many state dental committees. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Pappert was an avid certified scuba diver. He enjoyed traveling to many exotic places with his wife and scuba buddy, Mary Lou, and members of Flood City Divers. Dr. Pappert was an avid and loyal Pitt fan as well. His love of swimming led him to serve as a volunteer swim coach at the YMCA. Dr. Pappert also loved to ride his Harley, he was a member for over 20 years of the local Harley Owners Group, “HOG”. He also skied for many winters in Copper Mountain, Colorado with his longtime colleague, Dr. Seymour Finklestein. One of Dr. Pappert’s greatest joys was being a member of the Johnstown Seafood Club, American Legion, Elks, Vietnam Veterans of America, VFW, and NRA. When not ‘at the chair’ enjoying his patients, he and Mary Lou headed to their condo in Ocean City, MD. A LIFE WELL LIVED. A visitation will be held privately for the immediate family. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, January 3rd at 10 A.M. at Resurrection Parish, 324 Chestnut St., Johnstown.
