Obituary

Rzeszut, Joan D., 87, of Johnstown, formerly of Windber, passed away on March 1, 2025. Born September 30, 1937, in Johnstown, to the late Edward C. and Anna (Centrich) Gartrell. Preceded in death by her siblings, Paul Gartrell, Elizabeth Galayda, Madeline Siplivy, Erna Kaminsky, Edward C. Gartrell, and James Gartrell. Survived by her husband, Charles D. Rzeszut, Sr.; daughters, Karen Shima (John) and Beverly Kalanish (Rick); son, Charles D. Rzeszut, Jr.; grandchildren, Justin Kalanish (Kristen), Emily Kalanish, Joshua Rzeszut (Tiffany), and Matthew Rzeszut (Colette); great-grandchildren, Bennett and Everett Kalanish; siblings, Barbara Hurtack, George Gartrell (Shirley), Diana Rzeszut, Victor Gartrell (Kathryn), and Evelyn Rzeszut; and numerous nieces and nephews. Some of Joan’s favorite pastimes were spending time with her family, reading, planting up flower pots, and working puzzles. She was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and rarely missed a game. What brought her great joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always eager to see them and attended every special function and sporting event of theirs she could. Family will receive friends on Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 11:00am until the time of the memorial service at 12:00pm at Hindman Funeral Homes, 1521 Frankstown Road. Joan will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
