Obituary

John Russell Grumling, 88, of Johnstown, passed away March 9, 2026.

Born January 1, 1938, he was the son of the late Russell and Dorothy Grumling.

John was a 1955 graduate of Dale High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959. He worked for Bethlehem Steel for 35 years, serving as a supervisor in the electrical department until his retirement.

He was a longtime member of Franklin Street Methodist Church, where he sang in the church choir for more than 30 years. John was also a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, Alma Lodge, where he served as Noble Grand.

John had a lifelong interest in electronics and radio. An Extra Class amateur radio operator, he enjoyed collecting and restoring antique radios.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Grumling (Hatcher); his children, Jennifer Gresh (David) and Eric; his grandchildren, David and Jonathan Gresh; his sister, Nancy Sheaffer (David); his niece, Amy; and his nephew, Chris.

Friends will be received at Hindman Funeral Home, 1521 Frankstown Road, on Friday, March 13, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. Funeral services will be held at Franklin Street Church on Saturday, March 14 at 11 a.m with a short visitation there starting at 10:00am.
