Obituary

Newbaker, Marlene A., 71, Johnstown died July 26, 2013 at Windber Hospice. Born May 4, 1942 in Johnstown, daughter of the late William H. “Dutch” and Pauline (Ziesman) Ewald. Preceded in death by sister, Roberta M. Knapp; sisters-in-law, Wanda Ewald and Mary Agnes Ewald; nephew, Kevin Knapp; step-son, Philip Newbaker V and her husband, Philip’s 1st wife, Toni (Thomas) Newbaker. Survived by husband, Philip Newbaker IV, Johnstown; brothers, William L. Ewald and wife, Pat, Hanover, VA; Frederick H Ewald, Johnstown; Theodore J Ewald, Mechanicsville, VA and Herbert W. Ewald and wife, Judy, Johnstown; step-daughter, Karin Newbaker, Johnstown; step- daughter-in-law, Christi G. Newbaker, Johnstown; special friend, Michal Ann Stewart, Lantana, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. Marlene was a former member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church and attended Moxham Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Elks Lodge 175 and an avid golfer and bowler. She worked for American Airlines for 25 years She worked a variety of jobs including ticket agent and passenger sales. Her career took her to Pittsburgh, Ft Myers, FL, Dallas and Houston, TX, just to name a few. Marlene received many awards, including the Service Award from American Airlines for her work from September 11, 1978 to January 31, 1995 and a special support award for her work with the Transplant Foundation of South Florida, Collier County Chapter. She was a 1960 Graduate of Westmont Hilltop School District and a graduate of Airline Training School in CT. She organized many flight routes, including the Ft Worth to Dallas route. She was a member of the International Specialty Advertising Associates and designed a “Happy Holidays” card for the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. She was constantly working for others; was a kind and hardworking person and lived most of her life outside the Johnstown area, but returned to her beloved Johnstown after retirement to be with her family and friends. She had also worked for Robb and Stucky Furniture and Design Studio. There was not an issue that came her way, she could not tackle. At Marlene’s request, there will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm Sunday August 4th at Moxham Lutheran Church, corner of Ohio St. and Park Ave. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Windber Hospice; Moxham Lutheran Church; the Cambria County Humane Society or a charity of your choice, as Marlene was always helping others.
