Shomo, Meriam Edith, 99, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully and entered through the gates of heaven on November 24, 2023, in Johnstown, PA. She was born on August 6, 1924, in Boswell, PA, to Josiah and Bertha (Friedline) Horner. She leaves behind a legacy of love and family, including her three children, Roger (Donna) Shomo, Raymond (late Sonya) Shomo, and Janet (Harry) Whysong. Meriam was the last living member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ethel Hill, Martha Thornton, Ada Westermann; and her brothers, Owen, Ernest, Franklin, and Kenneth Horner. She was also preceded in death by longtime neighbor and best friend, Dorothy Kepple. Meriam will be remembered for her vibrant spirit and faith in Christ. Throughout her 99 years, she touched the lives of many. She was a devoted member of Bowserdale United Methodist Church, where she found solace and joy in playing the piano and serving as the director of Children’s Ministry, for 50 years, including Vacation Bible School and Children’s Bible study. In addition to her dedication to the church, Meriam had a passion for gardening, sewing, including many quilts and afghans. She not only nurtured beautiful flowers but also shared her talent by teaching others to carry on these gifts. Meriam’s home was always filled with warmth and love as she created memories with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and extended family. Meriam leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of her surviving grandchildren: Kathy (Michael) Ulmer, Melissa (Craig) Jones, Gregory (Lybia) Shomo, Jeffrey (Rosanne) Shomo, Gretchen Shomo, Kimberly Whysong, Matthew (Jyllian) Shomo, Todd (Alisa) Whysong, Shannon Shomo, Jared (Chris) Shomo. As we mourn the loss of Meriam, we find comfort in the memories she left behind and the impact she made in the lives of those around her.
