Obituary

Norman E. Goetz, 90 of Richland Township passed away Saturday, November 5, 2022 at Arbutus Park Manor. He was born in Windber on June 17,1932 to Ernest and Margaret Goetz. He was a lifelong resident of western Pennsylvania. Norman graduated from Winder Area High School in 1952. After high school, he served as a medic in the Army Medical Corps from 1952 to 1955 as part of 182nd Airborne unit stationed in Korea. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1972 from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Norman began his career in law enforcement in Somerset County as an assistant county detective and then continued service to the County for 3.5 years as a probation officer. In 1971, he accepted a position as a Parole Agent with the Pennsylvania State Board of  Probation and Parole. He retired from that position in 1995 after 24 years of service. During his career, he received 2 honors that were especially meaningful to him. The Pennsylvania State House of Representatives named him Best Parole Agent in the state in 1977, and in 1978 he received the State American Legion Parole Agent of the Year Award. In retirement, he worked on a part time basis, for several agencies dealing with youth and adults who have addiction/mental issues. Norman was a longtime member of the Meyersdale Masonic Lodge. He was a dedicated outdoorsman and loved hiking, boating, sport shooting, and all dogs, but especially Border Collies. Some of his most satisfying times were spent hiking in the woods with his dogs. He was also an avid reader and loved classical music. He was predeceased by his first wife of 27 years, Eloise Dowie Goetz and his second wife of 26 years, Corinne Starks Goetz. He is survived by his sister, Claudia Fischer (Richard) and his nephew Robert Fischer (Natalie). He is also survived by 4 stepchildren, 7 step grandchildren, and 3 step great grandchildren. They are Alicia Wright (Kevin McCarthy), Coral Yahnert (Dale), Morgan Wright (Linda), and Tressa Wright. Grandchildren Travis, Hannah, O’Rando, Drew, Liam, K.C., and Teddy. Great Grandchildren Adriella, Gabriel, and Lily Rose. The family would like to give special thanks to Norman’s caregivers at Arbutus Park Manor. Contributions in his memory can be made to Arbutus Park Manor or the Alzheimer’s Association, 1086 Franklin St., Johnstown, PA. Norman would also be pleased if you gather with friends and loved ones and raise a glass in his memory. Services and burial will be private.
