Obituary
Rowena Marie Witt, lovingly known as Ro, went home to be with Jesus on May 31, 2025, at the age of 87. Born to George and Nellie Garland on November 29, 1937, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Ro’s life was a testament to love, strength, and faith. Following the early passing of her father, Ro, aged 15, partnered with her mother to help raise her younger brother and manage their household—her caring nature and strength already shining through.
On June 25, 1958, Ro married W. Gerald Witt, and together they raised four children: Kevin (Sue Jamison), Keith (Kathi), Bill (Kay), and Susan.
Ro and Jerry were blessed with seven grandchildren: Korey (Kristy), Briana, Chuck (Kelsea), Kody (Kathleen), Matt, Abigayle, and Gabe; and five great-grandchildren. Ro served faithfully as a registered nurse, dedicating her career to caring for others in the places God called her. Her love of travel, films, reading, family walks, and preparing meals for anyone who entered her home reflected her joyful and giving spirit. She was an example of Christ’s love in action.
Those who knew Ro were touched by her steadfast faith, her warmth, and the way she made everyone feel like family. With a heart wide open, she shared Christ’s love inspiring encouragement, forgiveness, and new beginnings. She motivated all to look for the good, particularly in difficult situations. Her gift was the ability to personally connect with others, especially her grandchildren, serving as a loving and inspiring “Grandma role model.” She was a combination of strength, sweetness, protection, and love.
Her husband, Jerry, summed it up best: “She helped so many people.”
Granddaughter Abigayle shared Ro’s favorite Bible passage, which captures her heart and spirit:
“Love from the center of who you are. Don’t hit back, discover beauty in everyone. If you got it in you, get along with everyone. Don’t insist on getting even. That’s not for you to do. ‘I’ll do the judging,’ says God. ‘I’ll take care of it.'” — Romans 12:9, 17–19
In lieu of flowers, Ro requested that donations be made in her memory to:
• Arbutus Park Manor (Benevolent “Family Forever” Fund), Johnstown, PA
• Connellsville Area Community Ministries, Connellsville, PA
A private Celebration of Life service will be held at the convenience of the family.
