Obituary
Prothero, William John, “Dr. Bill”, 90, Johnstown, passed away May 29, 2024, at Windber Hospice. Born June 12, 1933, to the late Harry and Mary (Goff) Prothero. Preceded in death by first wife, Gloria (Good); and brother, Robert Prothero. Survived by wife, Donna (Bash) Prothero; son, Scott Prothero and wife Wendi; daughters, Jennifer and Wendy Prothero; grandchildren, Courtney Prothero and husband Michael Moore; Reece Prothero; Audrey Hynes; stepchildren, Karen Welsh and husband Gary, Deborah Lewis; Thomas Lewis and wife Naomi; step grandchildren, Truman and Kennedy Welsh; niece, Tammy Lane and husband Patrick; and nephews, Michael Prothero and wife Carrie, and Stephen Prothero and wife Eryn. Bill had many interests in life through which he made lifelong friends, and he valued those relationships. He also maintained friendships with childhood friends from Hornerstown and his college days, and others along the way. Bill was an assistant scuba diver instructor for the Y Divers at the YMCA, a member of the Johnstown Seafood Club, BPOE, Men’s Night Out, as well as the Sunnehanna Country Club. He graduated from Johnstown High School in 1951, the University of North Carolina in 1955 and from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School in 1960. Bill was proud to have practiced veterinary medicine for over 44 years, starting out with his father in the practice his grandfather had opened in Hornerstown. He was a 30-year member of the PA Veterinary Medical Association as well as the board of directors for the Humane Society. Bill was a member of Westmont Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon for 12 years. He enjoyed traveling the world, scuba diving, fishing, and skiing with his family and buddies, and later sightseeing with Donna to many new places, the Baltic Sea Cruise being his favorite. He loved jitterbugging to 1950s music and also to share the bounty from his garden. Bill will be remembered as a kind, intelligent, fun, loving, generous, and caring person with never a bad word to say about anyone. He was very proud of his family and loved them dearly. Special thanks to Windber Hospice staff, especially Sherry and Steve.
