Obituary

Burkey, Leo K., 88, Hastings, passed away on September 16, 2024. Born October 19, 1935, in Spangler, PA. Leo was a 1954 graduate of Patton Chest Township High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1958. He then worked as a Line Supervisor for Penelec with a career spanning over 30 years. Leo lived a full life dedicated to his family and hobbies. He had a passion for hunting and camping and was an avid gun collector. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, reloading ammunition, and spending time at his hunting camp. Leo was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1586 Hastings and Carrolltown Legion Post 506. He was also a social member of the St. Benedict Rembrandt Club. Leo was preceded in death by his birth parents, Maurice and Geraldine (Lamoreaux) Burkey; stepmother, Elizabeth Woodside; grandparents, Sebastian and Dorothy Burkey; son, Barry Michael Burkey; brother, Forrest Burkey; and sister, Judy Jarvis. Leo is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Gertrude; daughter, Diana (Fred) Bender, Patton; sons, Perry (Mary) Burkey; and Jeffrey (Gale) Burkey, Hastings; six grandchildren, Dana (Jason) Kopera; Justin (Julie) Bender; Tyler (Melissa) Bender; Cody Burkey; Ashley (Cody) Brawley; Megan (Collin) Brien; and ten great-grandchildren, Payton, Ethan, and Addison Kopera; Emma and Alayna Bender; Cassidy, Carson, and Cody Brawley Jr.; Theodore Bender; and Maverick Brien. Family and friends will be received Thursday September 19th from 2-8 p.m. at Easly-Hindman Funeral Home, Hastings, PA. Funeral mass to be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Fr. Thaddeus Rettger O.S.B., officiating. Military honors to follow. Burial at St. Bernard Cemetery. Donations may be made in Leo’s memory to the Hastings VFW.
