Collins, Alda H., 111, Somerset, died September 29, 2013 at The Patriot. Born July 26, 1902 in Somerset, a daughter of the late Henry W. and Lucy (Weigle) Hoffman. Preceded in death by husband of 52 years, William F. Collins; son, William H. Collins; brothers, Nevin and Royal Hoffman; sisters, Altha Craver, Ivy Bittner, Anna Miller, Melda Hoffman and Olive Golby.
Survived by her son, James Collins, Somerset; sister, Virginia Hoover, Somerset; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Alda was a member of United Brethren Church. She attended California Normals, and worked as a teacher of grades 1-7 in a one room schoolhouse. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge and War Mothers. She was an avid Bridge player and belonged to several card clubs, she also liked to read mysteries. At 111, she was the 53rd oldest person in the world, the 17th oldest person in the United States, and the 2nd oldest in the State of Pennsylvania, Theodore Roosevelt was President at the time of her birth, and she lived to see 19 other Presidents (Reagan was her favorite) serve the office. During the 50’s she served President Nixon a cup of coffee in Somerset, she voted during the women’s rights movement in 1919 and didn’t miss a vote after that, and her husband was a WWI veteran.
A graveside service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church Cemetery, 6567 Glades Pike, Somerset on Thursday October 3, 2013 at 1pm with Rev. Larry Hoover officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
