HOUGHTON – Donald E., 79, Johnstown, died Sept. 8, 2010, at Memorial Medical Center. Born Nov. 8, 1930, in Johnstown, son of the late Eugene and Mary Jo (Walters) Houghton. Preceded in death by brother, Paul and his wife, Marilyn; sisters, Jean and husband, Art; Mary and husband, Gilbert; and Pat; nephews, James Houghton and Donald Englehart.

Survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Carol (Englehart); children, Kevin and wife, Cindy, Johnstown; Thomas and wife, Marie, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Christine Houghton, Johnstown; Donald and Beth, Hagerstown, Md.; Kathleen Bock and husband, Eric, Lewisberry; and Carol Taylor and husband, Sonny, Hagerstown, Md.; grandchildren, Adam Stephens; Shannon, Austin, and Donny Houghton; Christopher Bock; and Stephanie and Nicholas Taylor; great-grandchildren, Atressa and Amia Stephens; brother, John and wife, Carol, Mass; also extended family, Martha and Mike Schott, Sue Englehart, Tom and Ginny Englehart, Chris Englehart, Larue and Jim Williams; numerous nieces and nephews; and faithful best friend, Pauli.

Member of Visitation Parish, Benedictine Oblates, and spent time studying with the TOR fathers in Hollidaysburg. Former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and usher, and a member of the Holy Name Society and grade-school football coach. Founding charter member of Father Ian Mravintz Council 10409 of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd degree member of St. Andrew’s Council 11308 Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree member of All Saints Assembly 954, Knights of Columbus.

He served in the U.S. Army in the 278th USAR RCT Infantry during the Korean War. Member of Gautier Local 2632 United Steelworkers Union. He was employed for 24 years with Bethlehem Steel as an electrician. Member and former officer of United Mine Workers of America District 2. He served 12 years as an electrician for United Mineworkers of America and 10 years as a maintenance technician for St. Joseph Catholic Church.

After retiring, he spent his free time making mission bead rosaries that were sent to Taiwan and Brazil for the Benedictine missions, Poland and Bolivia for the Sacred Heart Sisters, the school children at Central Catholic Elementary and St. Josephs Catholic School in Martinsburg, W.Va.; and other missionary causes. His time also was greatly devoted to his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., 146 Chandler Ave. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at Visitation Church, the Rev. Barry J. Baroni, officiating. Committal, St. Joseph Mausoleum, with military honors by Menoher Post 155 VFW Ritual Team.
