Gros, Anna (Ann)M., 91, Virginia Beach, formerly of Johnstown, PA, went to be with the Lord on July 5, 2015 with her daughter’s family at her side in Virginia Beach, VA. She was born on October 11, 1923, in Huntington, PA, to the late John and Mary (Mele) Maticic from Ljubljana, Slovenia. Preceded in death by her husband, Carl “Edward” Gros in 1956; also her sisters, Mary Kaczinski, Alice Mele, and Julia Penko; and brothers, John and Frank Maticic, nephew Frank Mele Sr, niece Ann Korber and great nephew Jimmy Maticic.Survived by son Edward (Donna) Gros, Salina, PA , daughter, Cheryl (Rickey) Douglas, Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Kathleen (Jon) Myers of Iowa, Kenneth Gros of PA, and Kelly Oneil of PA and Christina Dewey of VA Beach;  nieces, Juliann Sabol, Pat (Jim) Sloan, BJ – Jane (Ed) Snyder, Sheila (Jim) Dryden, Saundra Phillips; Janet (George) Roman; nephews, Jim Maticic, Bill (Diane) Maticic, Danny (Marilyn) Maticic, Frank (Nancy) Penko, Gary Maticic; great nieces, Barbara Fortunato, Linda Riddle, Danielle Lavo, Kari Williams, Jennie McFeathers, Julie Phillips, Cathy Cover, Tammy Maticic, Deanna Potochar, and Nikki Maticic; great nephews, Kenneth and Thomas Korber, Eric and Del Maticic, Greg Sloan, Chad Maticic, Frankie Jr, Steve and James Mele. Ann was a US Marine Corps Sergeant and Veteran of World War ll. She recently participated in an Honor Flight trip to Washington, DC (May, 2014) and was recognized for her service. Since 1997 she has been a member of the Women in Military Service for America and a member of the memorial. Ann retired from US Steel as an accounting technician in 1984 after 20 years employment. She served as a Union Officer for the following Councils: local US Steelworkers of America Union, Official Union Delegate, Central Labor Council Officer, and representative of the Legislative Committee of Pennsylvania. Ann was a 50+ year member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Slovene Society (SNPJ), the Greater Beneficial Union, and the Holiday Inn Swimming Group. She, also, served as a beloved Volunteer with the Ladies Guild at Lee Hospital. Additionally, she was an avid bowler in duck pins at Knights of Columbus with a 135+ average. She was a cherished recipient of many kind acts and joy filled visits of the King’s Companions of King’s Grant Baptist Church for seven years. Ann very happily resided at Marian Manor Assisted Living the past two years. We, her family, are very grateful to the compassion and respect the caring staff showed to “Mom” each and every day as well as to the King’s Companions.

One of her greatest accomplishments was being a wonderful and loving mom and dear friend, who will be missed dearly by many.A memorial service will be held at King’s Grant Baptist Church, 873 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach on Saturday July 25th at 2:00 PM, 2015. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at St Patrick Church, 609 Park Avenue Johnstown, PA on October 10th at 10:00 AM 2015. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.Donations may be made to King’s Companions or Hurrah Players in honor of Ann Gros.
