Artis, Bertha M. (Mercer), 83, Johnstown, passed away September 5, 2019 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center with her daughter, Kathy and special adopted daughter, Candy by her side. Born May 12, 1936 in Wausaw, FL. Preceded in death by parents, Walter and Neta (Griffin) Mercer; brothers, George and Jim Rodgers; and son-in-law, Charles “Charlie” Heinlein. Survived by siblings, Neal Rodgers and wife Linda; Jane Gibson; children, James Charles Archie “Chuckie” and wife Patty, OK; Kathy Heinlein, Johnstown; grandsons, Justin and Grant Archie; two special adopted daughters, Sandra Rogers, FL; Candy Smolk, Johnstown; step granddaughter, Belinda Lickenfelt and husband, Charles; three step great grandchildren; three step great great grandchildren; and numerous foster children and grandchildren. Bertha was always helping others in need. Principals of showing love, compassion, and serving others with open arms. Bertha loved playing bingo, lottery tickets, and was lucky at basket parties. She will be sadly missed by family, friends, and special aide and friend, Diane Spisak. Friends will be received Saturday September 7 from 1 p.m. until time of service at 4 p.m. at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 146 Chandler Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.
