Gibson, Donald E. – 89, Johnstown, passed away June 21, 2018 at his home while receiving Hospice care for cancer in the liver. Born January 21, 1929 in Johnstown He was a son of the late Russell H. and Dorothy V. (Hileman) Gibson. Preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Theresa (Miller) Gibson, who died in the 1977 flood; his second wife Gertrude M. (Kinsey) Gibson; three of his children (first wife) also died in the 1977 flood, Cynthia Gibson, Tamela Gibson, and Ernest Gibson; his son Donald K. Gibson; his siblings, Dorothy (Rich)(Malicki) Gibson, Russell C. Gibson, Mary Jane (Ribblett) Gibson, Ernest L. Gibson, Shirley L. (Maser) Gibson; brother-in-law’s Mark Rich, Joseph Malicki, Carl Ribblett, Robert Maser, sister-in-law Frieda (Garman) Gibson. Survived by his son Kenneth R. Gibson Sr., Johnstown; grandchildren Kristyn Jarrell engaged to Steve Taylor; Kenneth R. Gibson Jr. married to Jessica (Francis), and Brandon Gibson, all residing in the Phoenix, AZ area; his great-grandchildren, Kora, Aiden, Tiegan, Tillie, Tallon, and Luna; as well as numerous nieces. nephews, extended family and friends. He graduated from Johnstown Central High Class of 1947. He began work at Bethlehem Steel Corp., Gautier Division in September of 1947, was transferred to the Car Department, to Mine Car Wheel and Axle unit. Don served our country in the U.S. Army, being drafted in Jan. 1951 to fight in the Korean War with the 40th Infantry Division, 224th infantry combat team. He was honorably discharged in Nov. 1952. Don loved sports, especially softball, basketball, and hunting. When he was active in sports, he would play softball five days a week, in the Fireman League for West Taylor Volunteer Fire Company, and in the church league for Barron Ave. E.U.B.. He also enjoyed bowling in the Forge shop Duckpin bowling league. Don was a lifetime member of and a firefighter for West Taylor Volunteer Fire Co. for about 40 years. His service included serving as a Trustee and Vice President. He served on the recreation commission and as the caretaker of the West Taylor community baseball field for at least 30 years, and for his involvement with that they named it “Gibson Field”. Don was a longtime member of the Korean War Veterans Association, post #1 and an officer member of the Sheridan Athletic Club for many years. Friends will be received on Tuesday June 26, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hindman Funeral Home, 146 Chandler Ave. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday June 27, 2018 at 11am at the funeral home. Pastor Robert Wolf, officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Menoher Post #155.
