CARTHEW – Genevieve “Jennie,” passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on February 27 at the age of 98. Jennie was born December 1, 1920, in Johnstown, daughter of Felix and Stephania (Mrozowski) Kodgis. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; grandson, Joseph Carthew; sisters, Helen Czerniawski; Sophie Czornyj; Florence Kodgis; Phyllis Misosky; and brothers, Frank, Bill, John and Willie Kodgis. Survived by children, Loretta Gilkey (Jerry); William (Marion Landeros); Debbie Ballow Smith (John); Linda Morey (Ray Cooper); Jim (Carol Novosel); and Jeff (Danie Slippy); 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The lord blessed our mother with good health and for that reason she lived a full and active life. In her younger years she worked at the Westwood Lounge and later the El Rancho Steakhouse. She worked at the Election Polls for the City for 40+ years. She was a lifetime member of the former St. Casimir’s Catholic Church and 50-year member of the Mother’s Club. She also helped for many years making pierogies. Our mother was very proud of her Polish Heritage! She was a member of the Polish Heritage Choir and a member of the Polish Heritage Council where she received the Polonian Award for her dedication to preserving our heritage. She loved her polkas! She traveled with her sister, Phyllis, on many bus trips following polka bands. She started with her sister and friends Julie, Marilyn, Jennie and Jeannie the “Polka Chicks” and followed Polish Bill to all local festival’s with polka bands. She danced the polka until she was 90 years old! Mom also looked forward to all our 4th of July family reunions where all her family would gather for over 50 years. Our mother was our “rock” and will be sadly missed by all of her family and friends. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday March 3 at Hindman Funeral Home, 146 Chandler Ave., where vigil service will be held at 2:15 p.m., Deacon Sam officiating. She was a member of Resurrection Parish where funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Fr. George Gulash officiating. Committal will be held at Benshoff Hill Cemetery. A special thank you to the staff of Interim Healthcare-Home Care and Hospice for their exceptional care. Arrangements in care of Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., “Exclusive Provider of Veterans & Family Memorial Care.” Condolences may be made at HindmanFuneralHomes.com
