Barkley, George W. Jr., 90, Sidman, peacefully passed away May 9, 2018 at his home. Born September 16, 1927 to the late George and Elizabeth (Moschgat) Barkley Sr. Preceded in death by daughter, Terrie Frank; brother, Lewis Barkley Sr.; and grandson, Keith Barkley Jr. Survived by wife of 69 years, Iris (Myers) Barkley; children, Maureen Warren (Roy); Debra Rummel (Ron); Janet Barkley; Keith “Lucky” Barkley (LeeAnn); son-in-law, Steven Frank; siblings, Francis Barkley (Nellie); Gary Barkley (Doris); Lois Menett; grandchildren, Nichelle Rummel, Ronald Rummel Jr.(Ada), Deann Mignogna (Jason), Christine Warren, Roy Warren III, Carlene Barkley, Sander, Stacie, and Stephanie Frank; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. George lived a life of community service that began with his U.S. Naval enlistment for World War II and was honorably discharged after sustaining serious injuries during the Battle of Okinawa. While recuperating, he was awarded the Purple Heart. A life member of the American Legion St. Michael Post 551 as well as the DAV, VFW, and NRA, he passionately supported veteran organizations and later organized LST reunions for his former shipmates. George was also former mayor of Daisytown Borough, a founding member of Daisytown Sportsman Club, and a former member of the Johnstown Pool League.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman who especially enjoyed hunting in the American West and supported organizations that promoted outdoor activities and wildlife conservation.  As a former co-owner of Canteen Service Company, he enjoyed working in the community he loved and supported.  A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 1521 Frankstown Rd. Pastor Joseph Stains, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Hope United Methodist Church or the American Legion Post 551.
