Zelek, Joan E., 85, Johnstown passed away at her home on Dec. 25, 2015; allowing her to celebrate her Savior’s birth on earth and with him in heaven. Joan was born Dec. 14, 1930 in Altoona, PA, daughter of Walter H. and Dorothy E. (Kraft) Begalke. She married her “Polish Prince” on July 2, 1952 & celebrated 60 years of marriage prior to his passing. Preceded in death by parents; beloved husband, Blaine G. Zelek; brother, Robert Begalke; half-brother, William Begalke; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Survived by loving daughter, Tanya, wife of Robert Shaffer, Johnstown; grandsons, Chase, married to Ashton, Waynesburg; Nicholas, Johnstown; great­ granddaughter’s, Chloe and Harper, Waynesburg; half-brother, Donald Begalke, Phoenix, AZ; half-sister, Nancy (John) Keller, Altoona, PA; sister-in-law’s; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan graduated from Altoona High School. She cherished her role as a homemaker but also enjoyed her time and found great satisfaction as a teachers’ aide with the I.U.08. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. Joan had a kind and huge heart and will be fondly remembered as a wonderful cook and baker. Her greatest joy came from providing her family with a happy home filled with love and good food. Her grandsons and great-granddaughters were a source of pride and always put a smile of her face. The family would like to thank the staff of Interim Hospice for their care and compassion. Friends will be received Mon. Dec. 28 from 2-4 and 6-8 at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 1521 Frankstown Rd, where a funeral service and commital will be held Tues. 10 a.m., Pastor Lynne O’Shea officiating.
