John J. “Pap-Pap” Burgo Jr., 85, Johnstown, passed Sept. 3, 2014, at Latrobe Health & Rehab. Born May 20, 1929, in Johnstown, son of the late John J. Sr. and Margaret (Donahue). Survived by his wife, Ann (Palus), with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage on Nov. 22, 2013; daughters, Chris (Ron) Michlena, Johnstown; Judy (Mike) Soflarsky, Johnstown; and Mary Jane (Frank) Soflarsky, Elizabethtown; sons, Bob (Jill), Taylor, Mich.; Tom (Anna), Mount Joy; and John (Carole), Taylor, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sister, Catherine. Preceded in death by his brother, Joe, and sister, Helen. Longtime member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, currently St. Clare of Assisi. Lifetime member of Austrian Hall, where he was active in various positions throughout the years, having retired as financial recording secretary. Also a member of Union Social Club, Catholic War Vets and VFW. John was a proud Korean War veteran whose love of his country was only exceeded by his love for his family. After his discharge from the Army, he went to work for Swank Refractories, where he worked his way up from a Laborer to superintendent. He also was affectionately known as “Big Chief” by some of his family members. At the request of the family, there will be no public viewing and service will be held at their convenience.
