Carney, Joseph “Joe” Harris, 81, Geistown, passed away December 4, 2022 at Conemaugh Hospital. Joe was born June 14, 1941 in Memphis, TN. Son of the late Monroe and Charlyne (Harris) Carney. Joe was raised in Ripley, TN and was a true southern gentleman. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and went on to graduate school, earning a PhD in chemistry from the University of Illinois. He taught chemistry at the university level the rest of his career, retiring from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown after 40 plus years of teaching. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Hays (Williamson) Carney; children, John Carney, Lincoln, RI and Martha Rusk (Mike), Acton Ontario; grandchildren, Olivia and Shane Carney and Spencer and Julia Rusk; and 2 cats, Iris and Joe Henry. Joe was a sailor, ham radio operator, avid walker, lifelong learner, and a friend to all. Family will receive friends Friday, December 9th from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church, where Joe served as Clerk of Session.
