LTC Martha Joanne Makin, 80, (retired) of Somerset and formally of Johnstown, died March 30, 2023.  Born June 22, 1942, in Johnstown to Edward K. and Bessie Mae (Hockensmith) Makin. She was a 16 year lung cancer survivor. Preceded in death by parents; husband, Arnold C. Provost; sister, Nancy L. (Makin) Hoke; and brother-in-law, Frederick M. Griffith. Survived by sister, Shirley M. (Makin) Griffith of Somerset; niece, Patti (Griffith) Kocsis and husband James Koscis of New Tripoli, PA; nephew, Brian Griffith and husband Cliff Dellinger of Shermans Dale, PA; niece, Wendy (Hoke) Evenden and husband Ed Evenden of Hamburg, NY; great-nephews, Andrew Kocsis and wife Sarah; Matthew Evenden; great niece, Sara Kocsis; step-children, Christopher Provost and wife Joanne; Connie Provost; Paul Provost and wife Lisa; Stephanie (Provost) Vinditelli and husband Michael; and Diane (Provost) Mareira and husband Christopher; step-grandchildren, Michael, Arianna, Ashley, Aaron, Angelica, and Brianna; step-great granddaughter Via; an cousins and friends. A 1960 graduate of Johnstown Central HS and a Registered Nurse with a degree from Lancaster General Hospital. A Vietnam Veteran nurse stationed at the 85th Evacuation Hospital in Quy Nhon Vietnam in 1966-67 followed by many years in the Army Reserves achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Retired from the PA Department of Health. A special thank you to Randee and Dave Ankeny of Somerset, Dr. Rashid Awan of the Hillman Cancer Center, the staff of Interim Hospice Services, and the staff of the Patriot Nursing Home. Family will receive friends Saturday April 15th from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at 11:30 a.m. at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 1521 Frankstown Rd. Committal to follow at Benshoff Hill Cemetery.
