Lees, Paul M.- 86, Richland Township, passed away on July 2, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Johnstown, PA. Born August 7, 1931 in Johnstown to James and Ida (Johnson) Lees. Preceded in death by parents, sister Betty Varner, and step Brother Chick Burtnet, and son-in-law Shelbe Burtnett. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years Shirley Mae (Hostetler). Paul was a family man and proud of his five children: Constance (Leon) O’Connor, James (Sandy) Lees, Mary Alice “Cookie” Burtnett, Brian (Cheryl) Lees and Sheila (William) Berkebile; his grandchildren Sean, Carla, Troy, Travis, Holly, Heather, and Brittney; and Great Grandchildren Kaia, Dakota, and Baby Sharp. Paul worked for Bethlehem Steel in Johnstown for 35 years starting in the blacksmith shop of the mechanical department, to over 30 years in the axel division. He also worked maintenance for the Richland Township Municipal Building. At the same time he was also an active volunteer fireman in the Belmont Fire Company, becoming Chief of the fire company, and Honorary Chief. Paul was past president of the Greater Johnstown Fire Chiefs as well. Paul was an avid camper his whole life. After retiring from the mill, Paul and Shirley spent 10 years as camp ground hosts at several Pennsylvania’s State Parks, finally settling in a camp site at Glendale Year Round where they spent their summers camping, pontoon boating, wind surfing and kayaking (at age 84!) and nightly campfires. Paul was an extraordinary person. He was always there to lend a helping hand, and always available to those who needed him. His glass was forever half-full (generally with Genny) and he never lost his smile. His strength and support was the basis for the success of his five children, he set the example for all to follow. Paul loved well and was well loved. He will be missed. A Memorial Service will be held at his church, Belmont United Methodist on Friday, July 13, 2018 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to the Belmont United Methodist Church at 107 Coldren Street, Johnstown, PA 15904. Arrangements in care of Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc. 1521 Frankstown Road., “Exclusive Provider of Veterans & Family Memorial Care.” Condolences may be made at HindmanFuneralHomes.com
