Robert J. Diethrich, 87, of Gaithersburg, MD, formerly of Hastings, PA, passed away Friday, January 10, 2020, surrounded by family. Born September 13, 1932, in East Carroll Twp, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents James A. and Lucy A. (Cunningham) Diethrich. Also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Janet E. (Drass) Diethrich in 2013; brother, Frank Diethrich; sisters, Pat Williamson, Grace Davis, and Ruth Wilkinson. Survived by daughters, Lynne Beuerlein (Bob), Hampton, VA, Donna Saxman (Harry), Gaithersburg, MD; Doris Fejka (Richard), Gaithersburg, MD; grandchildren, Anne Dufek (Chris), Brian Fejka, Eric Fejka, Mark Saxman (Megan) and Scott Saxman; great grandson, Joseph Dufek; brother, Thomas Diethrich (Sonja), Rockville; sisters, Alma Stanek (Barney), Cannonsburg, PA, Lucy Fontenot (Chuck) San Mateo, CA; numerous nieces and nephews. Bob served in the U.S. Army and was a Veteran of the war in Korea. Bob worked at Bethlehem Steel for 32 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, woodworking, gardening, canning tomatoes and pickles, Pittsburgh Steelers, working in the garage, tending his apple orchard, baking chocolate chip cookies for his grandchildren and reading a good book. Bob’s heart will always be in Cambria County but he grew to love Maryland after he and Janet moved there in 2010 to be closer to his daughters, grandchildren and brother. He was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Parish in Darnestown, MD and previous member of St. Bernard Church before relocating to MD. He was also a member of Hasting VFW Post 1586; American Legion in Carrolltown, Hastings Moose Lodge 535, St. Bernard Cemetery Association, Hastings Fire Club and the Holy Name Society.Bob will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by his family and friends. Friends received 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM Monday January 13, 2020 at Easly-Hindman Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 333 Beaver Street Hastings. Funeral Mass will be held 11:00AM Tuesday January 14, 2020, St. Bernard Church, 148 Beaver Street, Hastings, PA. Interment will follow in church cemetery.
