Thelma Grace Anderson, 108, of Arbutus Park Manor Retirement Community, Johnstown PA, died at the home of natural causes on November 20, 2016. She was born November 6, 1908, in Franklin PA, to Andrew B. and Catherine (Ribblett) Shankle. Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Harry M., her parents, brother Harry, sisters Margaret Mackall and Irene McClain, and sons Glenn and Kenneth. She is survived by daughter Lois Law, son Donald, and more than two dozen grandchildren, plus numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Beginning with a honeymoon trip to California in 1927 in a Model T Ford, Thelma traveled extensively with her husband, a supervisor in the blast furnace department, originally with Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Johnstown. After residing in Concepcion, Chile, for 11 years where in 1949 Harry helped open the first modern steel plant in South American. They enjoyed a brief hiatus in the states. This was followed by a two-year stint in Eregli, Turkey, where her husband completed his career in the steel industry. The Andersons’ first 15 years of full retirement included wintering in Guadalajara, Mexico, and spending summers with their family in Pennsylvania. World travelers for years, they drove the Alcan Highway long before it was paved and toured much of South America and Europe. Residents of Kerrville, Texas, for a dozen years, Thelma Anderson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church there. Consistent with her wishes, there will be no viewing or formal final service of any kind.
