Shugars, Thomas Upton, 81, peacefully left this earth into the arms of his Heavenly Father April 29, 2023. He was born on September 7, 1941 to Dean and Amelia (Stephens) Shugars. Thomas is reunited with his parents, wife, Jovina (Paolillo) Shugars who passed away 1 month ago and his siblings: William, Dean, Robert, and Helen Shugars; (triplets) Byron (Barney), Edwin and Edna Shugars; and Hazel Brim. Tom and Jovina were married for 57 years and had four children: Thomas Shugars; Danielle (Daniel) Russell; Edana (David) Glessner; and James Shugars. Tom especially loved spending time with his 5 grandchildren: Aidan Shugars; Ian Shugars and fiancée Alexandra Williamson; Sarah, Jacob, and Tommy Russell. He was also survived by his sister Lillian Shearer and many nieces and nephews. Tom was a 1960 graduate of Johnstown High School and employed at Bethlehem Steel. He was known for his exceptional artistic talent of calligraphy, lettering, woodcarvings, sign painting, and his love for American history. He enjoyed spending his retirement as a Civil War reenactor with the 54th Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War and was so proud of his ancestors who fought in that war. He belonged to the Woodcarving Club and PA Genealogy Society where he loved working on his family tree. He loved to talk to people wherever he went and always had a story to tell. He was a medical miracle and beat the odds many times. He never wanted to say goodbye to us, so he would say “so long” several times until we would leave or hang up the phone. So for one last time we’ll say “So long and we’ll see you soon!” Family and friends will be received Tuesday May2, 2023 from 2-8 p.m., Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc., 1521 Frankstown, Rd., Johnstown, PA 15902, where a funeral service will be held Wednesday May 3, 2023  at 11 a.m. Visitation one hour prior. Burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family requests no flowers but can make donations however they choose. Arrangements in care of Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., “Exclusive Provider of Veterans and Family Memorial Care.” Condolences may be made at HindmanFuneralHomes.com
