Gertz, William “Bill” Henry, 86, Johnstown, died suddenly June 2, 2018 at home. Born July 5th, 1931 in Johnstown, he was the son of the late Gustav Gertz and Albertina Gertz. He was married to Lois (Corle) Gertz for 65 years and the couple made their home in Dale Borough. William was a graduate of Dale High School and a long-time member of Beulah United Methodist church where he was very active as a trustee and Sunday School teacher, as well as a 50+ year member of the Challenger Bible Class. His father immigrated from Germany to work in the steel mills, and William followed in his footsteps, working his way through correspondence courses to become a pattern maker in the former Bethlehem Steel and Johnstown Corp. He will be remembered for a great passion and skill for his craft. Throughout his career, he also had a variety of other positions, including work at Pyrofax Gas, Somerset, in insurance sales, and for Boeing Aircraft. “Bill” was known for his many kindnesses extended to family and a broad array of friends in the community, and especially in Dale where he was a former council-member. In retirement, he volunteered with St. Vincent DePaul to drive their mobile healthcare van and was always known for a good deed. He was a loving husband and father to his children and will be remembered as a generous man who had a great sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Robert, Helen, Margaret, and Earnest. His sister, Ruth survives. His children survive, including James (Kathy Maley) of Johnstown; Bruce (Joni Fish-Gertz), of Avoca, New York; Dave (Jennifer Bell), of Richmond, Virginia; and Sandee Gertz, Nashville, Tennessee. His grandchildren will remember him as a fun and loving grandfather who enjoyed making up games and playing sports with his extended family long into his 80’s: they are: Jordan Umbach, Nashville, TN; Micah Fish-Gertz, Philadelphia, PA; Erich Gertz, Nashville, TN; Christian Umbach, Pittsburgh, PA; Jonah Fish-Gertz, Philadelphia, PA; Hannah Gertz, Richmond, VA; Jennie Gertz, Johnstown. William was one of the finest examples of God’s loving kindness to all his family and a man of great faith. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. There will be no viewing and a cremation is arranged through Hindman Funeral Homes. A Memorial Service will allow family and friends to gather at Beulah United Methodist Church in Dale at 11:00am, Friday, June 8, with Pastor David Stains officiating. A light luncheon will follow at noon. All are invited to the join the internment at Grandview Cemetery, Westmont following the dinner. We are also planning a “Going Home” Celebration for July 29th, time and location to be determined.
