George Henry Shirk, 93, Vintondale, PA, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2017 at Forest Hills Personal Care Home in Sidman, surrounded by loving family members.  Preceded in death by parents, George Harrison Shirk and Maime (Widman) Shirk; wife of 69 years, Josephine (Joyce) Helen (Homola) Shirk; sister, Marion Lees, brothers, Jack and Wayne Shirk; and granddaughter, Georgia.  Survived by brothers Richard and Donald Shirk, and sister Betty Kochis.  He is also survived by five daughters, Arleen Gaskill of Vintondale, PA; Carol, wife of John Mitchell, Vintondale, PA;  Kathy, wife of Jonathan Kessler, Oakland, MD; Tami, wife of Rex King, Somersville, CT; and Tracy, wife of Eric Nagle, Twin Rocks, PA; six grandchildren:  Kelly, married to Matthew Marines, Melissa Dishong, Krystyn, married to Eric  Farabaugh, Justin King, Neil Dugan and Garrett Nagle; and eight great-grandchildren:  Jacob, Madison and Ethen Marines; Mitchell, Dylan and Katerina Dishong, and Grant and Kenadee Farabaugh and numerous nieces and nephews. George was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many.  George was a World War II veteran in the 1471st Engineer Maintenance Company, and a survivor of the military train wreck in St. Valery-en-Caux, France in 1945. He was also a member of the Vintondale VFW and a former member of the Chickaree Ridge Runner Snowmobile Club.  He worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation in the metallurgical lab for 30 years and a foreman for 5 additional years.  George loved living on the Long Lane Farm for the past 50 years, where he enjoyed raising and showing Quarter Horses, a variety of farm animals, and cruising the fields in his Polaris Ranger.  He was an avid hunter and got his last deer at the age of 89.  He was also a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins.  George was a former member of the Overbrook United Methodist Church in Johnstown.  A special thank you to Forest Hills Personal Care Home and Asera Care Hospice staff members for providing such kind and compassionate care. By request, there will be no viewing.  A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
