BUKOWSKI – Leona, 92, formerly of Portage and more recently of Johnstown, passed away on February 11, 2022.   The daughter of George and Elizabeth (Gaydos) Magerko, Leona is preceded in death by her husband, John; sons, John Robert and Michael George; grandson Paddy’s wife, Becky; parents; and ten  siblings.  “Mom” to Steve and Colleen Bukowski, Hastings; Pam Bukowski, Annapolis, MD; and Sharen Bukowski, Johnstown.  “Grandma” to Paddy, Ian (Kate Dunn); Sean (Anna), Mary Kate, Annie, and Jennie Bukowski; Valerie (Nate) Minarchick, Daniel Bukowski, Stephanie (Chad) Wolf, Natalie (Aaron) McGuire.  “Great Grandma” to John Max and Ryan Bukowski; Callia and Elsie Bukowski; Grace and Riley Minarchick; Emelyn Wolf; and another great-grandchild expected in May.  “Sister” to Jeannette (Chuck) Dedo; “Aunt Lee” to niece, Michele Oros and numerous other nieces and nephews and “Godmother” to several.  A devout Catholic her entire life, Leona was baptized in Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Catholic Church in Portage, PA.  After her marriage to John in 1949, she became a long-time member of Sacred Heart Church, where she was very active with the Ladies of Fatima.  While living in Johnstown, she was a member of Visitation Church.   After many years of working in the Gallitzin shirt factory, Leona continued to share her sewing talents making quilts for hospital and nursing home residents.  In earlier years, Leona enjoyed playing bingo and traveling.  Celebrating her birthday was special to Leona and she was often quite lucky with her lottery ticket gifts!   Leona was an excellent cook – pierogies, haluski, home-made noodles, and pizza were some of her specialties.  She was well-known for her delicious nut rolls, donuts, gobs, and Italian colored cookies.  Her family was truly her joy and she was happiest when sharing her homemade food and desserts with family and friends.    Although her children and grandchildren follow and treasure her recipes, nothing tastes quite as good as Grandma’s!  Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral mass which will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 19, 2022, at St. Bernard Church, Hastings, PA, Father Thaddeus Rettger, celebrant.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.    We’ll miss you Mom and Grandma but we’re happy knowing you’re home resting in the gentle, loving arms of God. Arrangements in care of the Easly-Hindman Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., “Exclusive Provider of Veterans and Family Memorial Care.”  Condolences may be made at HindmanFuneralHomes.com
