Obituary

Patton, George M., 98, Johnstown, died Dec. 18, 2014, at Presbyterian Home. Born May 5, 1916. Preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Horner Patton, aka Barbara Ann Horner, M.D.; parents; and his brothers, Bill, Frank and John. Survived by daughter, Pamela A. Patton, Johnstown; son, Christopher G. Patton; and granddaughter Olivia C. Patton, both of Philadelphia. George was a 1941 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in chemical engineering. He was a terrific engineer. After Pearl Harbor, George enlisted with the U.S. Army Air Corps and went to Officers Candidate School and graduated from Michigan State University with a M.S. in meteorology in 1943. He served in World War II as a captain and chief meteorologist for the 48th Fighter/Bomber Group; participating in D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and numerous other battles in the European Theater. After World War II, George was employed as an engineer for Standard Oil at their refinery in Aruba from 1946 to 1948. From 1948 until his retirement in 1981, he worked for Bethlehem Steel Corp.; first as a general foreman at the Coke Plant for two years, then as a project engineer in the engineering department for 31 years. He was a licensed professional engineer and a member of VFW and American Legion. George loved to play golf and was a talented artist; painting beautiful watercolors. Member of Westmont Presbyterian Church, where he served six years on the board of trustees, and the last two as president. At George’s request, there will be no viewing or service. Interment, Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
