Obituary

Custer, Alvin J. Jr., 85, Johnstown, went to be with the Lord on September 22, 2024, surrounded by family at his home. Born June 24, 1939, to the late Alvin and Martha (Plunkard) Custer Sr. Survived by loving wife of 60 years, Donna (Lambert) Custer; children, Rev. Kenneth S. Custer (Susan); Kevin J. Custer (Charlene); Crystal Dull (Clinton); grandchildren, Hannah, Naomi, Lydia, Jacob, Cameron, Colton, Mackenzie, and Anderson; great grandsons Peter and Gabriel; brother, Walter J. Custer Sr.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Al was a 1958 graduate of Greater Johnstown High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from the Johnstown Postal Service. In 1957 he was the left fielder for the Johnstown entry AAABA tournament team and received a try out for the Detroit Tigers. He was very involved as a dad, coach, manager and umpire with the St. Therese baseball league and Cub Scout pack 180. Family will receive friends Wednesday September 25th from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 1521 Frankstown Rd., where a service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. Pastor John Mize, officiating. Committal and military honors to follow at Benshoff Hill Cemetery.
