Obituary
Our beloved and cherished Mother, Rosalie Carlene Worthington, passed away on her 86th birthday surrounded by her devoted, loving family. After several months with expressions of her love for all of us, on her final day she left us without a word, hug, kiss, or wave goodbye. Her heart, the biggest part of her, just stopped after a brave and most courageous battle for life. She leaves us in a state of shock and inconsolable grief, stumbling around, trying to deal with the huge hole that now resides in each of us. She was and will always remain the cornerstone of our family: our rock, greatest supporter, and best friend. Allow us to give you a brief review of her beautiful life, her loves, and those she leaves.
Rosalie was born in Johnstown, PA, the first of five daughters to Henry and Hulda Riffle. She graduated in 1956 from United High School in Armagh, PA. She was a 1959 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, PA, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Rosalie taught in Pennsylvania, Texas, and New York. In addition to the many years of teaching and shaping many young children’s lives and futures, she also obtained her real estate license and sold properties in Texas and Pennsylvania.
Married in 1960 to Edward T. Worthington, deceased, the couple were the proud parents of three children, Craig (Ana), Colleen Maney (Lee) and Lisa Worthington. Rosalie loved her children and grandchildren Camden (Ashly) Worthington, Phillip Worthington, Cole Maney, Carys Maney, and great-granddaughter, Elyse Worthington. Rosalie is also survived by her sisters, Frances (Terrell, deceased) Boring, Kathy (Ronald) Good, Marilyn (Paul) Duncan, Gayle (Joseph) Gorchesky, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Making a home for her family was always paramount and Rosalie did so many times over in New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Florida. After the death of her husband Ed, she built her own first home at the age of 65. All of these were filled with warmth and love and whenever you were there she made you feel right at home.
For so many years Mom enjoyed making jewelry out of antique silverware and led her women’s church group with the sale of these items in benefit of various benevolent groups. She was also happy and humbled while making thousands of pillows for chemotherapy kits to comfort cancer patients. So many charitable, selfless and tireless efforts for others whether it be for strangers, her family, or friends, she gave so very much to this world.
Rosalie’s youthful energy and spirit caused many people to believe her age to be younger than her actual years. At 75 years young she went parasailing, zip lining at 78, and at 85 she was walking more than two miles a day. She loved nature, walking, gardening, and being outdoors. She was grateful and expressed genuine appreciation and thankfulness for everything and all of those around her, often saying how fortunate she was. In actuality, we were the fortunate ones for having her in our lives. We will love, miss and cherish her for all our remaining days.
Visitation will be held Wednesday February 21, 2024, from 5-8 p.m. at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 146 Chandler Ave. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday February 22, 2024, at Blacklick Community United Methodist Church.
Rosalie will join her husband, parents, grandparents and many other family members with burial at Blacklick Creek Cemetery, in Vintondale, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCan) in Rosalie’s memory.
