Obituary
Callio, Elizabeth Daily, “Betty”, 96 of Johnstown. Born June 24, 1917, the eldest daughter of Edward Foster Daily and Margaret Rollier Daily. Residing first in downtown Pittsburgh and then the Dormont District, the family eventually moved to Johnstown in 1931, where her father was the chief executive of Uneeda Plumbers on Washington Street. She attended Westmont High School, graduating a year in advance with a diploma in business, working then for Dr. Longwell. While taking her break on the back porch of the doctor’s office, she struck up a conversation with the liveried delivery man for Erdmann’s Florist Shop which was just across the alley. She laughed and asked him why he had “et cetera”, ETC, embroidered on his jacket. That’s how, as she told us, she met Edgar Thompson Callio, the love of her life and husband for a little over 52 years. She and “Eddie” set up housekeeping, survived the end of the Great Depression, World War II, and the Korean War. In 1950, they adopted their daughter, Vicki into their little family. Life continued simply with Betty as a homemaker and Ed working for US Steel until 1975, when Betty and her husband were badly injured in a horrific automobile accident while on their second honeymoon in Hawaii. Betty recovered and cared for Eddie for 13 years until his passing in 1988. She then continued to “snowbird” solo back and forth between Johnstown and Florida. When her eyesight began to fail in 1998, Vicki joined her on her adventures and journeys. In 2010, they made their way back to the family homestead in Menoher Heights, where she lived comfortably till her death on December 20, 2013. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Edgar; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Jane Callio; her brother-in-law, Raymond Doyle; her mother-in-law, Edna Callio; her youngest sister, Connie Duman and her best friends, Leona Clemenson and Della Wagner. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki; her middle sister, Marjorie Doyle, with Margie’s kids and grandkids; her cousin, Alice Louise Wirick of Somerset, with Al Lou’s kids and grandkids, and her friends from Bethany Presbyterian Church, her card clubs, and the community of Menoher Heights. Many more have passed on a few are left behind, but not many, and we miss them all. We will celebrate Betty’s life with a Service of Witness to the Resurrection at Bethany Presbyterian Church, on Saturday January 4th. Friends and relatives will be received from 9:30am until time of service at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the church Betty loved, Bethany Presbyterian Church, 228 Blaine Street Johnstown, PA 15906-2132, (814) 539-9194.
