James Richard "Jim" Miller, Sr.

Obituary
James (Jim) R. Miller Sr., age 85, of Johnstown, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, at his residence, reuniting with the love of his life, Jean A. (Fama) Miller in Heaven. Family members surrounded him at the time of his passing. A lifelong resident of the Johnstown area, Jim was known for his unwavering dedication to family, country, and community.
Jim dedicated 45 years of service to Mercy Hospital, witnessing every chapter of its growth and change. While employed in the housekeeping department, he brought a quiet dependability to his work and a kindness that left an impression on patients and coworkers alike.
A proud patriot, Jim served honorably in the U.S. Army for 30 years. He spent 20 years as a heavy equipment operator with the 458th Army Reserves and another 20 years as a cook with the 876 Army National Guard Unit — a role that allowed him to nourish and care for his fellow soldiers in more ways than one. At every parade or patriotic event, Jim stood tall and saluted the flag with deep respect — a tradition reflecting the strength of his values and one he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Jim also served as a firefighter in the Lower Yoder Fire Department and later as a fire police chief in the Dunlo Fire Department.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jean; his father, Chester Miller; his mother, Anne Frankhauser; his brothers, Donald, Robert, and Charles Frankhauser; and his sister, Barbara Harvey. While his loss leaves a deep ache, his legacy lives on through his children, Jim Miller Jr., Virginia Shook, Anthony Miller, and Catherine Wilde, as well as, his 11 cherished grandchildren, who will remember their grandfather for his stories, his strength, and his steady love.
Jim was a man of few words but of great heart. He believed in hard work, showed up for those he loved, and held tight to tradition. Whether standing proud in uniform, telling a joke at the kitchen table, or watching his grandchildren grow, Jim lived a life marked by quiet heroism and deep devotion.
Funeral services will be held at Hindman Funeral Home. Details will be shared with friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to attend a local parade, stand tall, salute the flag, and donate to a veteran organization- just like Jim would have.
