Obituary

CANNON – Reverend Kyle Charles Cannon, former pastor of Calvary United Methodist Church in Johnstown, PA from July 2002 until June 2009 died peacefully July 9, 2009 after a long illness. Reverend Cannon was born October 10, 1943 in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late Lessie Charles and Flourine (Manning) Cannon. He graduated from Florida Southern University and attended Drew Theological Seminary where he earned a Master of Divinity and subsequently was ordained, and New York Theological Seminary where he earned a Masters of Sacred Theology. In addition, he was a certified supervisor for the Clinical Pastoral Education, becoming the youngest pastor to ever receive that certification, and mentored many clergy in developing skills in pastoral care.

Reverend Cannon had a vital and varied pastoral career that spanned almost 40 years. In addition to his most recent pastoral position, he spent much of his career providing specialized ministries as a Chaplain at Mayview and Woodville State Hospitals in Pittsburgh, as Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Care at Glade Run Residential Treatment Facility in Zelienople, PA, and as founding director of the Latrobe Pastoral Counseling Center in Latrobe, PA. His passion for spiritual care and nurture of children and young adults coupled with his love of the outdoors led him to be involved in providing camping leadership at Jumonville and Camp Allegheny, where he served on the Board of Directors. Reverend Cannon is survived by his son, Aaron Cannon and his wife, Monica, of Wilmington, NC, a sister and brother-in-law, Elsie and Bob Crowe and brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Doris Cannon of Johnson City Tennessee, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaved his beloved partner, Linnie, his two constant and adoring canine companions, Noah and Katie and many dear friends. Reverend Cannon was preceded in death by his son, Tim Cannon in 1994. Reverend Cannon will be remembered lovingly by many who were deeply touched by his sensitive care, compassion and love for others.

Visitation will be Sunday, July 12 at Hindman Funeral Homes and Crematory Inc, 146 Chandler Ave. from 2 until 5 pm. His life and ministry will be celebrated at a memorial service on Monday, July 13, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church. The service will be led by Reverend Arnie McFarland with other community clergy participating. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Reverend Kyle and Tim Cannon Adventure Camp Memorial Fund at Jumonville: 887 Jumonville Rd, Hopwood Pa 15445. The fund will be used to support camping opportunities for children who otherwise would be unable to afford them.
