When hunting season came, all other chores were put on hold until hunting season was over. He especially loved his hunting camp and the time spent there with his boys. “Pappy” taught hunter safety courses for many years to youngsters at the St. Clair Trap and Field Club. Baseball was another passion. He coached numerous teams throughout the Johnstown region. The highlight of his career came in 1974 when he coached Swank’s Hardware to the city title with a 20-5 record. The team then represented Johnstown in the AAABA tournament posting a one and two record. Many, many folks in this area remember Dick for his deep, beautifully rich bass singing voice. When he sang “Ava Maria” at wedding ceremonies even the priests cried. He loved Barbershop A cappella style singing and sand in multiple Barbershop quartets. Dick was a member of the S.P.E.B.Q.S.A. singing society for many years, hosting shows at Cochran Auditorium and Vo-Tech Auditorium to name a few. He was a man of deep, abiding faith who often pondered the mysteries of our God. He taught his family through word and deed how to love and serve and honor the Lord. He attended St Therese Catholic Church every Sunday, Richard read his Bible so many times, the cover literally broke and fell off. Richard was a powerful presence in so many ways. He will be sadly missed, but always loved and remembered by many family and friends.
