Humphrey, John George, 73, Patton, died Feb. 19, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born Dec. 19, 1942, son of the Howard C. and Mary E. (Myers) Humphrey. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Janet M. Humphrey. John graduated from Patton High in 1960, where he played right guard on the football team. He was remembered by many special classmates who took time to remind him of their times together as his own memories were fading. John attended Williamsport Technical Institute before entering the Navy, where he served aboard the USS Graffias, spending 19 months in the Vietnam area. He received the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Medal of Republic of Vietnam, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, and a citation for outstanding performance of duty during logistic operations in direct support of combat units of the U.S. 7th Fleet. John was employed for over 25 years at Conemaugh Generating Station, where he retired as Superintendent of Station Maintenance in 1994 to raise cattle. He loved his job and the people he worked with at Conemaugh. Many colleagues became friends of the family during John’s illness and brightened his days with their visits. Their generosity and graciousness will not be forgotten. Though he had no biological children, John was a beloved uncle and father figure. He gave freely of his time and affection, not only to the children in his family, but to many, especially during his years as a 4-H and Jr. Cattleman’s Club leader. John was a hard worker who always assumed the best of people. He was a jokester and teller of tales. To the end, he was an optimist, a fighter, and a prince of a man. .
