John H. Niemritz, 94, of Richland died March 27, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. He was born March 25, 1923 in Johnstown and was the son of the late Harry and Catherine (Olinyk) Niemritz. Preceded in death by his first wife Loretta (Hartwiger), son Richard, brother Nicholas, and infant sister Anna. Survived by his loving wife of fifty years Jean (Mayer) Niemritz; children David Mayer and wife Jessica, Bridget (Niemritz) Simonovich and husband Harry, Patrick Niemritz and wife Judy, Tracey (Niemritz) Ross and husband Jim; grandchildren Richard Niemritz, Jr. and wife Felicia, Emily Simonovich Smyth and husband Brian, McKenzie and Benjamin Ross, Zachary and Asher Mayer; great grandchildren Richard III and Dorian Niemritz, and Molly Smyth. John was a graduate of Johnstown High School class of 1942. He served in the Navy during WWII from 1942-1945 aboard the U.S.S. Braine in the South Pacific. He worked at the Tribune Democrat for 38 years as an electrician. He was also a member of the American Legion for over 60 years. He was lovingly cared for at home by the staff of Senior Life Johnstown. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 31st at St. John Gaulbert Cathedral, Very Rev. James F. Crookston, officiating. Friends will be received at 1 p.m. at the church until the time of the service. Committal will be private.
