Shirley Johns Clawson, age 90, died April 9, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and her devoted, faithful caregivers. She was born January 24, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised on Chickaree Mountain, the sixth of nine children born to Phoebe Jane (Kuchenbrod) and George W. Johns.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Clawson Sr. and is survived by her children, Shelley Lundborg, spouse Robert, of San Diego, California; Nancy Burdette, spouse David, of Baltimore Maryland; Gail Spangler of Baltimore Maryland; Robert L. Clawson Jr., spouse Michelle, of Round Rock, Texas; and Richard Clawson, spouse Jamie, of Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Shirley had a long employment history including several banks and retail organizations, but her favorite job was as a rural postal carrier for the US Post Office, which she retired from in 2004.  She loved each of her rural recipients knowing them all by name, and enjoying the brief time she could chat with them.

An active life for Shirley included her many bowling leagues over the years, and she won so many trophies that she had a problem trying to find room for them on her shelves. But very simply, she loved bowling and the competitive nature of the sport, and bowled until she couldn’t. Shirley actively enjoyed watching the Steelers games, they were “her” team and she would cheer them on from the comfort of her favorite chair, every Sunday, no matter the weather! All her children knew to check the Steeler game schedule before attempting to reach her by phone.

After she retired, she would spend joyful hours in her garden, landscaping and planting, and talking about it to her children, who she also inspired. The love of planting, or gardening, was instilled early by both her parents, and lasted until she could no longer keep up with her large yard, but the beauty remains.

Family will receive friends Thursday April 18th from 1-3 p.m. and 4:30 until time of service at 6 p.m. at Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 1521 Frankstown Rd. Arrangements in care of Hindman Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., Condolences may be made at HindmanFuneralHomes.com
